FAQ

About the PhiloType test and your results

What is PhiloType?

PhiloType is a free service that organizes how you think and make judgments in everyday situations into four axes and 16 types. After answering 36 questions, you learn which type is closest to you and which philosophers share that type. It focuses on ways of thinking rather than personality, and treats the result as a tendency at that point in time.

What will I learn from PhiloType?

PhiloType classifies how you make judgments and what convinces you in everyday situations along four axes. The axes are Logic and Empathy (L/P), Essence and Change (A/K), Whole and Individual (T/I), and Skepticism and Openness (S/E), and they combine into 16 types. The result page for each type lists philosophers who share that tendency in thinking, as thinkers who came before you.

How many questions are there?

There are 36 questions: 32 about the four axes and 4 about interpretation and intervention. The test takes about 8 minutes, and you answer each question on a 7-point scale. A detailed version with over 100 questions is in preparation.

What are Interpreters and Interveners?

They are two ways of relating to the world within the same type. Interpreters tend to find joy in understanding the world and finding meaning; Interveners tend to find joy in acting on the world and changing it. This is judged from four questions, separately from the four-letter type. Because it rests on only a few questions, the result page shows it as a tendency.

Do I need to know philosophy?

No. The questions are about everyday situations and use no philosophical terminology. PhiloType is designed as an entry point to philosophical ways of thinking, not as academic philosophy.

Does it cost anything? Do I need to sign in?

The test and the result page are free, and you can take the test without signing in or registering an email address. Save the URL of your result page to come back to it later.

Is PhiloType related to the MBTI?

PhiloType uses four original axes designed from philosophical concepts and is separate from the MBTI instrument. MBTI is a trademark or registered trademark of The Myers & Briggs Foundation in the United States and other countries. PhiloType is not affiliated with the Foundation or with The Myers-Briggs Company.

Can my result change?

It can. The result is based on your answers at that time, so if you take the test again later, axes marked as close calls in particular may move to the opposite pole.

My result does not feel like me.

That feeling is itself a clue. Check the axis scores on your result page for axes marked as close calls. If you are near the opposite pole, also read the guides for the types listed under “Similar types.” No type is better than another, and an unexpected result is an entry point to a new way of thinking.

How are philosophers assigned to types?

Philosophers are classified by how they developed their thinking rather than by the topics they wrote about. Each axis has a decision test, such as which one a thinker ultimately follows when logical analysis and lived conviction conflict. As a result, placements can differ from classifications based on major works, textbook impressions, or answers from AI assistants.

Is AI used to determine my type?

No. Your answers are scored with a predefined method, and the type is determined from that score. The philosopher portraits are illustrations produced with image-generation AI.

Can I share my result?

Yes. The result page has a share button for X and a copy-URL button, and a share image is generated automatically. Result pages are not indexed by search engines, so only people you give the URL to can view them.

Can I guess other people's types or check compatibility?

PhiloType does not guess other people’s types or judge compatibility between types. No type is better than another, so please do not use results to evaluate or exclude other people. If you are curious about someone, suggest they take the test themselves.

Can PhiloType be used for hiring or performance reviews?

Please do not use it for hiring, placement, performance reviews, or similar decisions. PhiloType is designed as a starting point for self-understanding and conversation, and its validity as a test of ability or aptitude has not been established.

Is this a medical or ability assessment?

No. PhiloType is not intended for medical or psychological diagnosis, or for measuring intelligence or ability. If you have concerns about your physical or mental health or about developmental characteristics, please consult a medical professional.

How is my answer data handled?

You can take the test without signing in, and your answers and result are stored anonymously. Anyone who has the URL of a result page can view that result. We do not collect your name or email address during the test. Stored data is used as statistics that do not identify individuals, to improve the questions and scoring.
